Genjutsu is a very complicated kind of ninja art in the shinobi world, and not many manage to achieve levels too great with it. If you, however, end up becoming one of those that desire to delve into this profession, this is where hopefully all inquiries regarding the subject are answered.
All Genjutsu require handseals unless stated otherwise. This means all genjutsu are invoked via sight, and they must be looking at you in order for it to take effect. Genjutsu are also single-target only unless stated otherwise. The only types of genjutsu acting as an exception are Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu along with Magen: Nijuu Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu.
The user's genjutsu tier directly correlates with three things: the grade of the genjutsu in use, the target's grade, and the target's mind tier. The user, should they decide to delve into genjutsu, will have access to perks of the Genjutsu tree, which count as a profession, and do not need to get Mind perks. Alternatively, those that don't specialize in Genjutsu pick up perks of the Mind tree for Genjutsu defense, which counts as a misc perk as opposed to a profession.
Genjutsu perks grant as many grade ups to the Genjutsu in use as many as the tier the user has, with a cap of 2. (With T2 Genjutsu, a C-Rank turns into an A-Rank for scaling purposes.)
Alternatively, Mind perks do the same except work in the other way around- Mind perks take away grades to the opposing Genjutsu as many as the number of tier they have, with a cap of 2. Having the same tier in Mind as the opponent's Genjutsu will effectively cancel any bonuses out and will be referred to by its base rate. Otherwise, opposing Genjutsu are weakened. (With T2 Mind, B-Ranks become D-Ranks for scaling purposes).
A person's capability of being able to Kai out of a Genjutsu depends entirely on their grade: D-, D and D+ = D-Grade | C-, C and C+ = C-Grade, etc. The target's grade is effectively counted as one above their current grade, which is used as a base to Kai out of Genjutsu.
If their grade is higher than the opposing Genjutsu grade, they are able to Kai out of the Genjutsu and retain their action for the turn.
If their grade is equal to the opposing Genjutsu grade, they must take the entirety of their turn to Kai out of the Genjutsu and will be able to act once again the next turn.
If their grade is 1 less than the opposing Genjutsu grade, they must take the entirety of their turn and a significant duration into the next turn to break free of the Genjutsu.
If their grade is 2+ less than the opposing Genjutsu grade, they must take the entirety of their next 2 turns to break free of the Genjutsu.
For example:
Shinobi A is C-Grade has T3 Genjutsu and is casting a B-Rank Genjutsu on Shinobi B.
Shinobi B is C-Grade and has T3 Mind. His grade is effectively B-Grade base for the sake of escaping the Genjutsu.
T3 Genjutsu increases the B-Rank Genjutsu's grade by 2, however, T3 Mind lowers it back down to its base value. Shinobi B, being the same effective grade as the Genjutsu, must now take their full turn in order to use Kai and dispel it.
It is important to note that in order to attempt to Kai out of a technique, the user must first have already figured out in some way or another that they're in one in the first place. Sensors or Doujutsu are able to immediately detect when a Genjutsu has been cast and on who, even if it was on themselves. Please use common sense when it comes to detecting Genjutsu- if someone has subtle methods of applying their technique, it's not likely that you're figuring it out too easily, but they vary from case to case.
Alternatively, it is possible to escape Genjutsu through pain. Not mental pain, as some techniques may apply, but physical damage to your body. In order to break out of a C-Rank technique, you must get inflicted with a Moderate injury, whether you inflict it or someone else does. In order to break out of a B-Rank or higher technique, a Severe injury is required to be inflicted in order to break free.
When it comes to dispelling Genjutsu from other people, you must first find out they are in an illusion in the first place. You may then use Kai on only a singular person, which then your grade/Mind tier are set against the caster's Genjutsu tier to determine how easy it is to break them out.
While Genjutsu isn't an incredibly potent profession early on, later on down the line it can become something that terrifies those that oppose you in a battle. If you're dedicated to the profession, there are certain perks exclusive to Genjutsuists to enhance their illusions and make them true nightmares to deal with.
With apt training after learning how to expand their versatility, they've mastered the art of channeling their Genjutsu chakra through sound in the form of an instrument. This allows them to play regular every-day instruments, such as guitars or flutes, and cast sound-based illusions from them. They cannot convert techniques that require a sight trigger into sound, however, as those must be used normally.
Note: Allows the user to make sound-based Genjutsu through instruments only.
Phantasm Field (T3) (Semi-Unique)
This individual's discovered a method to truly make use of their Genjutsu prowess and better suit any technique to their situation. They're capable of expanding illusions that are normally only able to affect one person and expand it in a sort of 'field', afflicting all of those within range. They can also choose to exclude anyone they don't want particularly affected, even if they're caught within it. This is, however, ignored should the user be using sound-based Genjutsu, as everyone in its range is affected. Due to how the user must focus their chakra to utilize an illusion, they'll find it to be very straining on their reserves depending on both how many people are caught in it and how long it's held.
Note: Anyone up to 4 tiles away from the target can also fall under the effects of a single-target Genjutsu. Can target up to 3 additional people.
Illusory Vanishment (T4) (High-Tier Semi-Unique)
After meticulous study with the art of Genjutsu, this person has come up with a method of significantly augmenting their illusory techniques. They're now capable of inventing techniques that allow them to vanish completely and hide their presence from sight, whether it involves a subtle disappearance or outright vanishing from their spot.
Note: Does not allow the user to vanish in pre-existing Genjutsu, but instead lets them create techniques that allow them to visibly disappear.
Mirage Magician (T4) (Unique)
Truly thinking outside of the box, this individual has found out more creative and subtle ways of applying Genjutsu. Sight is no longer the only trigger available to them, expanding their arsenal to a terrifying level: Sound and Touch are now at their disposal when it comes to causing people to fall underneath their illusions. Their sight triggers have been enhanced as well; handseals aren't even required to execute techniques that normally utilize them. They can simply wave their hand or perform hand movements to cast the illusion all the same.
Note: Allows the user to alternate between sight, sound and touch-based triggers for any of their Genjutsu, and does not require any tools to be able to do so.
