"Sickness is an ordeal. A fearfulness. The foolish die, the clever go further. If you knew it was a boon, would you not die? But what is lordly about seeking what is known?"
The Sand Plague
What is it? Where did it come from? What does this mean for you? To put it in layman terms, the Sand Plague is a slow but deadly disease that originated from The Land of Wind; the exact reasons are unknown but given the country's poor situation, be it from excessive internal conflicts, to the war with Kumogakure and the Suna-Nin's unkempt ways, some of them even acting akin to bandits? It's anyone's guess. However now, the Sand Plague has spread out, onto The Land of Water, more specifically Kirigakure. But what does this mean for the Kiri-Nin and their neighbors? They are now at risk and almost nobody is safe from this crippling and insidious plague.
But what does this mean for you? A ninja that may be at risk of contracting this awful illness, it means three things; one, your efforts should be to either avoid or destroy the plague. Two, you need to investigate and seek out answers yourself if you wish to learn more. Three, if you do become infected, time will continue to run on ahead and mostly it'll be running out for you, as the days pass by.
What is currently known about this disease?
There's plenty of information running about, having it now been a long-running ordeal in The Land of Wind, the plague floating from village to village like an insidious cloud of death; passed on through carriers or other means. Not all of it is true, but what has been gained, has been gained from observation. Furthermore to make it loud and clear; Sunagakure has not been hit by the plague yet, only minor and major various villages around The Land of Wind have come into contact with the plague, though this is likely to change if things continue to get worse!
Currently known list of symptoms:
Symptoms of the disease vary; so far it has been classified into two distinct stages.
Stage 1 Symptoms include but are not limited to; Dry and cracked skin akin to sandpaper. Stomach cramps. Vomiting. Difficulty breathing. Paranoia. Anxiety.
Stage 2 Symptoms include the stage 1 symptoms and also include but are not limited to; Dysentery. The skin cracking and leaking greenish pus and blood in the most extreme cases. The swelling of internal organs which end up breaking down and becoming malformed basically flooding with other bodily fluids. Eventual organ shutdown leading to death; which is both extremely slow and painful.
Information gathered from reports and whispers:
As for identifying the presence of the disease, it has been noted that buildings become covered in meat coloured moss when within the plague's influence, the moss is rough to the touch and viciously clings to structures; it feels more like rust than actual meat however, it's appearance rather unusual and alien.
On top of this, areas suffering the plague are usually covered in a light fog; black floating specks of 'dust' or 'soot' in the air. It is like a black misty fog of death; as described in most cases, breathing in these areas is highly difficult and whilst persisting in those areas will not be the source of infection, it lowers one's immunity against the disease which can lead to eventual infection. However there is a blessing to all this; the disease only has a limited influence within a region, moving to and fro from one dirty spot to a clean spot, every few days; according to reports from the Land of Wind.
Wearing protective clothing is a must; whilst it doesn't make one immune to the disease, it certainly helps minimize the risk of contracting it. Along with this, being fit and healthy also helps ensure the best chances of avoiding the plague.
It's main infection vectors appear to be airborne, followed by contaminated liquids and bodily fluids, then contact from infected surfaces and individuals and chakra...? However, the disease has a habit of lingering on an individual, being dormant only to crop up on them in their 'darkest hour' as it tries to take hold and infest itself within the individual. Sand Plague is not an illness of convenience, only inconvenience.
Some individuals are even rumored to have a natural immunity to the disease; Sunagakure medical-nin have yet to develop a vaccine from this, but a vaccine does little for any currently infected individuals, what is needed right now is a cure. A panacea to expunge the disease from the body, so it may heal and grow stronger. For now, there are merely antibiotics to help combat the disease and stunt it's growth in an infected individual's body.
It has been also noted, that fire is an effective element when fighting against the disease; burning the recently deceased infected prevents the plague from spreading so quickly. Making a fire near the borders of infected areas helps, mostly with the light along with the destructive heat that fire emanates helps ward off the disease, making it encroach on the fringes of an infected area slower and should a plague cloud draw near? It will force it to shy away; allowing organizations and villages to help combat the flow of the disease, buying more time before it moves onto another area, after all time is a valuable resource against this 'invisible enemy'. Of course this is only temporary, eventually when the disease wishes to flow elsewhere it will do so.
But how does one determine their risk? And their worth?
(This section and beyond is OOC knowledge for player convenience!)
It's quite simple; the disease doesn't follow much in the way of conventional rules, it has a mind of it's own and only seeks to do the worst for 'manfolk'.
When you are in danger of infection you will be approached with a narrate and will be forced to make two rolls; these rolls determine your vector, in which the disease needs to land within, to infect you. However there are certain conditions which can help push this into your favor, such as immunity boosters made by medical-nin or having a naturally high resistance to the disease. You will be informed of your advantages and disadvantages when the time comes but the base concept remains the same.
The rolls are as followed: two separate d100s. For an example lets say a doctor rolls 75 and 32, this means his vector is 32 to 75; if the plague rolls a number that lands in between those two, they are now infected and have contracted stage one of the disease.
After this, they will need to every so often roll against the disease trying to kill them from the inside-out. That is where your perks come into play quite heavily; having perks which help against disease along with having naturally high endurance and vitality can help ward off the disease from further progressing inside your body. These bonuses however, vary from case to case; they will not be defined or definite throughout the duration of this arc, as the plague too evolves and has a mind of it's own.
However the road to a death due to the disease is to first contract it, fail two rolls when warding the disease off when you have Stage 1 of the disease and to then fail the final roll of the Stage 2 disease which will eventually lead to death; this varies once again on a case by case basis, this disease whilst it is able to be beaten by mundane methods does not act entirely mundane itself.
Some days it will be lenient, other days it will stop trying to lose and play to win; it is an ever present enemy and accepting one cannot understand it fully, is the first step in trying to overcome it and beat it. However, that being said, it is encouraged to try and seek answers about this enemy but do not try to find reason in the madness it tries to breed within the individuals it touches.
But first, what are the next steps? Beating it of course; cures destroy the plague from within a body, vaccines have a chance to make healthy clean bodies immune to the disease. Whilst the plague is currently within a village, the only way to truly expunge it, is to develop a method of being able to mass-cure every ninja and civilian within that settlement. And then in order to prevent any more incidents, vaccinate; just to be safe.
But what about the weird red-mossy growths, my character is seeing on the buildings in my village? This means one of three things; the disease is about to strike that structure, or it's going to originate from it or in most cases, the disease is festering around and within it. Further more, if an area is currently afflicted by the Sand Plague, an RP flag will be present describing as such. Obviously be smart and roleplay accordingly, wear protective clothes and go about your business.
The disease often makes people paranoid, making them hear and think things. Odd things.
Hold on! But I want to fight it? How do I make my actions matter?
Obviously, event runners can't be on twenty-four-seven to provide the answers, nor should one think they can instantly be rid of this plague so easily. Each week, you will be given the chance to perform a rather big deed to contribute against the disease globally potentially, to see if you've found a step closer to understanding this disease and in proxy, getting a step closer to beating the Sand Plague overall. Every few days of course (OOCly) you are free to try and make efforts to combat the disease on a more personal level.
Medical perk tier does matter, along with how you approach the situation at hand; you can't just simply sit in a lab and cure the disease, you need to get your hands dirty and by getting your hands dirty, you may risk yourself but in the process? Get closer to defeating the Sand Plague.
Immunity is also something that will be sought after, highly after all it prevents one from dying to the disease; vaccination is not flawless however, you will be forced to roll for infection, albeit the vector will be modified by the medic applying it -- the better their perks at the time, the better your chance will be of becoming immune to The Sand Plague, however, you must be absent of any infection prior, so for that, you will need a cure. If you manage to pass the roll, you will no longer have to worry about the plague yourself!
Be warned, it will take time to defeat The Sand Plague and a lot of effort; it will not be an easy task and you will probably feel hopeless and as if there's no actual winning. That is actually a very easily possible scenario if a collective effort isn't taken up and people purposely fuck up, however, just because you've lost doesn't mean it is over. There will always be chances to get back into the fight against the plague and if there seems to be a big enough mistake formed by too much ignorance during the events, then some clues and hints will be dropped, as to provide some guidance. But ultimately it will all fall down onto the players to either make the best of a shitty situation or, make great strides to make the necessary advancements before more and more fall victim to the plague.
Does this mean everyone will die to the plague or get infected? No. Does this mean you are confirmed to die if you have the plague? No, but also yes if you take no action to change your fate. Of course, it will be a shitty way to go, to die due to bad luck; so don't be a bitch and don't sit around waiting for the cure, it will not come to you, you will need to work for it.
Anyway that about covers it for the primer...
What's coming up next? What is planned?
In the upcoming days and weeks, there will be more posted about this, along with events ran regarding it; some PvE, some PvP. For the current infected villages that players occupy will also be given 'heat-maps' to showcase which areas are currently afflicted with the Sand Plague actively, along with the civilian death toll when things get rough, on top of more story posts and so on, regarding the progression of the Sand Plague arc; whether it gets better or worse for the average shinobi. Recently we did have a PvP mission related to the Sand Plague that took place, we are likely to have more of that in the future, so stay tuned.
This is all planned to be as self-running and interactive as possible; with very minimal event-character involvement to shift the tides of how things are going, outside of 'RNG dice rolls' and very specific events, which are likely to be PvE or PvP objectives as rewards for being successful. There will be no 'scripted outcome' however, only what the players make of it; there are no safety nets for either Kirigakure or any other village with player characters within it, nor other settlements ICly, should the Sand Plague reach that far.
If you all stand by and idle, of course it'll get worse, but if an active effort is taken to fight back at the disease? Maybe things will change then and there. It's all down to the players; this is something that ultimately reacts to player involvement. Either fight it. Avoid it. Ignore it. Or wallow in it. The choice is yours.
